This mains powered video signal enhancer is compatible with RGB, s-video and composite signals. Feedback from owners of these 'magic boxes' suggests that they are an ideal solution for those wishing to make legal 'backup' copies of their DVDs using a DVD recorder where permission exists. Also work for archiving VHS tapes to DVD and recording Digital Satellite where permission exists.
This device is produced and sold for the purpose of connecting a DVD player to a VCR in order to transmit the video and audio signal via the RF (aerial) output for viewing on televisions with no SCART sockets. It is not designed exclusively to facilitate the circumvention of video copy protection systems. Certain video copy protection systems have been known to interfere with some LCD projectors, TV/VCR Combi units and TV tuner cards which work on the VCR method for capturing video input. In this case, a video signal filtering/conditioning device such as this lead could be used to correctly display copy protected video sources on equipment affected by these systems.
The 'SmartMaster Gold' can be used legitimately for timeshift recording of Freeview transmissions where copy protections systems such as Macrovision and CGMS might inadvertently prevent you from doing so. This occurs when the recording device interprets data contained in the vertical blanking interval as copy protection signals and consequently refuses to permit recording.
