Multi-region.co.uk is based in Bath, and has specialised in providing multi-region upgrade services to both the trade and public since 1999. Over the years, we have modified literally thousands of DVD players. In the height of the DVD player sales boom, we were modifying hundreds of players each week by soldering custom firmware chips inside them - hardware upgrades.

In recent years, there has been a change in the way DVD players are manufactured, with companies like Sony, Panasonic and Pioneer taking a 'softer' stance on region coding. The result of this change means that is now not necessary for a modern DVD player to be dismantled and a chip fitted to make it multi-region. Our 'Self Service' upgrade mail order service enables customers to perform the multi-region upgrade at home using a specially chipped remote or a 'firmware upgrade' disc. The 'Self Service' upgrade option is naturally more cost-effective than the old workshop upgrade because there is no need to transport the DVD player back and forth.

As the requirement for hardware modifications declined and the demand for DIY solutions increased, we migrated our activities away from engineering and towards the provision of DIY solutions by mail order. From May 2008 we ceased the workshop upgrade service entirely. Although this was a tough decision to make, we genuinely feel that if a DVD player is so old that it requires a hardware modification for multi-region playback, the owner would much better off purchasing a new DVD or BluRay player instead.
